International Women’s Day, 8 March 2023
International Women’s Day has been observed since the early 1900's. Annually on 8 March, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate achievements. A global web of rich and diverse local activity connects women from all around the world ranging from political rallies, business conferences and government activities to networking and community events.

Diversecity Role Models
To mark this day and celebrate role models for diversity in our profession Women in Architecture/Architects for Change has published a profile in the memory of the late Norma Merrick Sklarek who passed away on 6 February 2012. Norma was the first African-American woman architect to be licensed in the USA.

For a generation of minority and women architects, Sklarek served as a symbol of what could be, and was a stalwart mentor to those she knew.

“For Norma to be leading the entire department of a major architectural practice and doing truly high-visibility, cutting-edge work was something that we all looked to, and we all took pleasure from,” … “She was teaching, she was engaged, and she was available to young architects, particularly to women and minority architects.”

As a mark of our respect and to acknowledge the significant contribution Norma Merrick Sklarek has made to the profession her profile will launch the Role Models section of our web site.
